It’s September 8th — and that means it’s Secretary of Defense James Mattis’ birthday.
He’s now 67.
Here’s a little background on him, via TDC:
A Marine general nicknamed “Mad Dog” is not one to be messed with, and that’s part of the reason that President Trump brought him on as his Secretary of Defense. Despite, the nickname came long before General Mattis joined the 45th president in the nation’s capitol.
Secretary Mattis spent 44 years in the Marine Corps, during which he also earned himself the nickname of “Warrior Monk” because he never married or had children.
During his time in the armed forces, Mattis served as head of the US Joint Forces Command and Nato Supreme Allied Commander. After that, he was promoted as the head of US Central Command (Centcom) where he led the American military’s Middle East forces.
Here’s are some of his most famous quotes:
- “I don’t lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word.”
- “The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some assholes in the world that just need to be shot.”
- “I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you [expletive] with me, I’ll kill you all.”
- “I’m going to plead with you, do not cross us. Because if you do, the survivors will write about what we do here for 10,000 years.”
