BREAKING: House Approves Border Wall

On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives, headed up by Speaker Paul Ryan, passed legislation that provides $1.2 trillion to fund the government past Sept. 30, and allocates $1.6 billion towards President Donald Trump’s border wall.

TDC reports:

The legislation gives $658.1 billion to the Department of Defense, $44.3 billion for the Department of Homeland Security and allocates the rest of the money towards other federal agencies. The bill lops all 12 annual spending bills into two one piece of legislation.

If Congress failed to act by the Sept. 30 deadline, portions of the government would be forced to shut down and all non-essential government employees will forgo payment until they reached an agreement. The bill now makes its way to the Senate for approval.

The House passed another measure in July which provided $790 billion for defense, homeland security and infrastructure projects. The July bill also included $1.6 billion for physical barriers to be constructed along the southern U.S.-Mexico border.

The move will likely be seen as a big win for the Trump administration, which has been working to figure out a way to avoid a government shutdown while also ensuring that Congress provides funds for a wall along the southern U.S.-Mexico border.

Democrats have repeatedly shown their unwillingness to provide funding for the border wall. The president’s negotiations with Democrats over what to do with Dreamers is the latest example. Democrats agreed to provide funding for border security, not a border wall, if the president would provide protections for Dreamers.
