Moderate Senate Democrat Joe Manchin from West Virginia alluded to his liking of President Trump’s SCOTUS pick.
While most other progressives will attempt to decry and tear down Judge Neil Gorsuch’s impeccable record and renowned credentials, Manchin said for his colleagues to “put partisan politics aside” and not block or impede the nomination process.
Manchin, who broke from party lines in calling for his colleagues not to launch a filibuster attempt against Trump’s high court pick, said the Senate has a responsibility to “do our jobs as elected officials” when it comes to vetting.
“The Senate should hold committee hearings; senators should meet with him, we should debate his qualifications on the Senate floor and cast whatever vote we believe he deserves,” Manchin said in a statement.
Manchin is the only Democrat to come forward and support Sen. Jeff Sessions’ nomination to attorney general, and will likely be the first — or only — who will fully support Judge Neil Gorsuch.
