First, everyone needs to know what exactly an EMP attack is. Here’s a quick summary by The Heritage Foundation:
“An EMP is a high-intensity burst of electromagnetic energy caused by the rapid acceleration of charged particles. An EMP attack has the potential to decimate America’s electrical and technological infrastructure, effectively sending the U.S. back to the 19th Century. As society grows more reliant on electronic devices, so its vulnerability to an EMP attack.”
Last year, the Republican Congress ordered the Department of Homeland Security to create a a plan for securing America’s vulnerable electric grid against every danger imaginable — from small to large — including sabotage, cyberwarfare and electromagnetic pulses (EMPs).
However, there hasn’t been much activity by the Obama administration when it comes to fulfilling these important demands.
Thankfully, according to Newsmax, Gen. John Kelly stated in his confirmation hearing that he is making it a top priority to protect and defend the power grid and America’s methods of communication from all hazards conceivable.
Along with protecting the power grid, he is in charge of protecting American soil from invaders, disasters, and terrorism.
The confirmation of Gen. Kelly will be a big step-up from President Obama’s lackluster DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson.
