An elementary school teacher in Florida has been “reassigned” after a pro-deportation post was made on Facebook during school hours.
Veronica Fleming has been taken out of the classroom and reassigned to administrative duty after she posted a Facebook status Thursday saying she was “glad about massive deportation” and there would be “less mouths to feed,” the Daily Mail reported.
In the article about immigrant protests that she posted, she also thanked President Trump.
“The funny part about immigrants staying home is the rest of us who pay for them are here at work like we’ve always been. Looks like less mouths to feed today. Have fun while you still can,” she wrote. “So glad to hear about massive deportation. Let’s make America great again. Thanks Donald Trump!”
The teacher taught at Parkside Elementary School, where 96 percent of students are minorities. Her post caused outrage among parents at the school, where 70 percent of students are Latino and 20 percent are Haitian.
The principal became aware of the Facebook post after several parents called the school to complain a few hours after she posted the status, WBBH reported.
The deputy superintendent and human resources got involved in the situation and decided to reassign the teacher and conduct an investigation. Among liberal circles, a petition calling for her firing has reached over 3,000 signatures.
“We greatly appreciate our parents who have communicated to the school to share concerns so that we can address this issue,” Principal Tamie Stewart said. “I want to ensure our families that this person’s individual post is not at all reflective of our school staff in any way.”
