Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tex., wants to help PresidentDonald Trump “drain the swamp,” and he may have come up with the perfect way to do it.
Cruz and Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., are introducing a constitutional amendment that proposes to limit the number of terms of members serving in the Senate and House of Representatives. The current proposal recommends no more than three terms for House of Representatives members and no more than two terms for Senators.
The proposal written by Cruz and DeSantis notes that complacency is rampant in Congress and that “passing term limits will demonstrate that Congress has actually heard the voice of the people.” Furthermore, they “believe that the rise of political careerism in modern Washington is a drastic departure from what the founders intended of our federal governing bodies. To effectively ‘drain the swamp,’ we believe it is past time to enact term limits for Congress.”
Their goal is to dismantle the “permanent political class.” Currently, 79 members of Congress have been in office for at least 20 years, and 36 members have held their offices for more than 30 years. Even fewer have any experience outside politics.
It looks like career politicians may just have to find a new line of work. No wonder Trump considers the Cruz-DeSantis amendment a great idea.
